Horse racing is one of the most ancient sports of all time. It is said that this sport even existed in Ancient Greece, Babylon, and Egypt many hundreds of years ago. It is often referred to as the “Sport of Kings”. Horse racing is great fun and you know you've had a good day at the races when you come out with a bit of profit in your pocket! IGT have been on a roll as of late with some great new slots so I was quite eager to try this game out and see how well it replicates this fine noble sport.

It is a 3 reel slot game with 5 paylines and it comes with some interesting features like wild multipliers, combination wins, and a Raceway Derby game.

Special Features

The first feature to mention is the 3X Wild Symbol which is depicted by some red roses adorning the word “3X”. It is a very important symbol in the game as if you land this symbol as part of a winning combination then it will treble your payout! That is not all as if you if you manage to land 2 or more of these symbols then a win will be greatly increased with a massive 9X multiplier!

One nice aspect of the game is that you can land combination wins on the reels. For instance, any combination of watermelon, orange, plum, grapes, or lemon symbols will still award you with a win.

The standout attraction of the game is the Raceway Derby feature. In the main game, you will see 5 horses at the starting line of a race track just above the reels. Each horse is attributed to a feature such as jackpots and free spins. All symbols on the reels include the Derby Ribbon sub-symbol except the Wild symbol. When a Derby Ribbon sub-symbol lands on the reels, the horse with the corresponding rosette colour will advance one space. The first horse to reach the end of the race awards its feature.

A nice thing about this feature is that the positions of the horses are saved for future games. If two or more horses make it to the finish line at the same time then a photo finish takes place to determine the winner, just like in real horse racing. When a horse wins the Raceway Derby, all of the horses will go back to the starting line for the next spin. If the yellow horse wins then you will be awarded a small jackpot, the green one gives a medium jackpot, and the red one gives the big jackpot. The main horses you should keep an eye on in this feature are the pink and blue horses as if they win then you will be awarded free spins and multipliers.

For instance, if the pink horse finishes first then you will be given 5 free spins with multipliers ranging from 2X up to 10X but if the blue horse wins then you will be awarded 10 free spins and multipliers starting from 4X up to 13X.

Theme, Graphics and Sound

The graphics of this game have a real cartoon feel to them as they are quite simple in design and look like they have been hand drawn by someone. The symbols are bright and colourful and consist of a variety of different fruit such as lemons, grapes, watermelons, oranges, and plums. The animations are worth a mention as horses trot slowly along the track as you land the derby sub-symbols on the reels. It is quite reminiscent of those carnival games you would play as a kid where you dropped a ball in a hole to make your horse advance.

There is not that much music in this game apart from the loud trumpet call to signal the start of a race. The game is also filled with the sounds of excited punters as they place bets on the 5 different horses. It compliments the game really well and really adds to the atmosphere as you spin the reels.

Our Verdict on Champion Raceway

Champion Raceway is made by IGT and it's an action-packed day at the races. Although this game does not contain too many features, the Raceway Derby game is great fun to play and it provides excellent replay value. This slot is Highly volatile so you could be waiting some time before you land a nice payout and it is mainly aimed at professional slots players.
