The Mayan civilization was an ancient Mesoamerica civilization who lived in many parts of South America hundreds of years ago. It was one of the most dominant indigenous societies in the world until the 16th century when the Spanish conquest began. This once great civilization is known the world over for its famous temples, fearsome warriors, religion, music and for a diverse set of unique languages. Software developer EGT decided to pay homage to this glorious civilization with their latest slot release: Mayan Spirit.

Special Features

The first feature to highlight is the Wild symbol and this symbol is represented by an intricately detailed Mayan coin. It substitutes for all other symbols except the Scatter symbol which is represented by a beautiful looking Mayan temple. The Wild symbol is the highest paying symbol in the game, as if you are lucky enough to land 5 of these symbols then you’ll be treated to a wonderful 1,000X payout! Another interesting feature of the Wild symbol is that it comes stacked on the reels which helps to make things much easier to complete lines and get some wins in.

To activate the Free Spins game, you will need to land 3 Scatter symbols on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th reels. Once triggered, you’ll be taken to an alternate set of reels and given 5 Free Spins. Land 3 more Scatters while in this feature and you’ll be given 5 additional Free Spins.

The game also features an optional Gamble mode. This triggers when you land a win on the reels and involves correctly guessing the colours of red or black of some playing cards. If you guess the colour correctly then your win is doubled. It is a very risky venture but it is possible to gamble for 5 consecutive rounds. Just be warned that if you guess the colour of the card incorrectly then you will lose all of your current winnings and be taken back to the main game. Thankfully, you can collect your winnings at any time after a round finishes by simply pressing the ‘Collect’ button.

The last feature to mention is the set of 4 progressive jackpots which can be viewed at the top of the reels. The cool thing about these jackpots is that they can be won at any time on any spin. When a jackpot game is triggered, you will be taken to a new screen where you get to choose 3 cards from 12 cards that are face-down. If all 3 cards match the same suit of one of the progressive jackpots then you will win that jackpot total.

Theme, Graphics and Sound

The graphics are nicely detailed as the game is played out in front of a golden background that is full of Mayan coins and intricate Mayan designs. Symbols are a nice tribute to Mayan culture and are comprised of a Mayan Chief, a Mayan Girl, a Jaguar, a Toucan, a Mayan Temple, a Mayan coin, as well as the standard A – 9 icons. The animations are decent as symbols burst into a life when you land a win on the reels. In particular, I really liked how the jaguar snarls his teeth at you when his symbol is part of a winning combination.

Whenever you form a win on the reels you'll be treated to some soft soothing panpipe sounds. It ties in rather well with the Mayan theme of the slot.

Our Verdict on Mayan Spirit

Popular software developer EGT created this slot and it is a fine representation of ancient Mayan culture. The game is beautifully designed and really easy to play. The Free Spins feature is the standout attraction of the game and it is a little bit disappointing that you are only given 5 Free Spins but you can retrigger more Free Spins which more than makes up for it. I also enjoyed playing the Gamble mode but be warned if you find you are on a hot streak then collect your winnings sooner than later or you will risk losing it all in the next Gamble round! I found this game to be of Medium variance so you might find yourself landing quite a few dry spins when starting off but the fact that you can win a maximum payout of 1,000X on each spin and the chance to win from 4 lucrative Progressive Jackpots should entice many a player to check this game out.
