This game is based on the classic movie The Wizard of Oz which was released all the way back in 1939. The movie was inspired by the book written by L. Frank Baum that was published even further back in 1900! It’s a classic fantasy movie that I remember quite fondly especially the songs and amazing sets. The story is all about Dorothy who is transported to the magical world of Oz along with her cute dog named Toto. She is a long way from home which is in Kansas and she must battle a wicked Witch and make it to the Emerald City in order to get there again.

The game has 30 paylines and includes a whole host of features such as Ruby Slippers, Respins, Find the Broom, Free Spins, and a Crystal Ball mode.

Special Features

The first feature worth mentioning is the Wild symbol and it is denoted by a Wizard of Oz logo. It substitutes for all other symbols except Jackpot, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, Wicked Witch, Wizard and Crystal Ball. It’s the second highest paying symbol in the game.

If the Jackpot symbol does not appear on reel 3 and the Wicked Witch, Wizard, or Crystal Ball symbols do not appear on reel 5 then the Ruby Slippers feature will trigger randomly. When this feature begins, bubbles will appear on the screen and can turn any of reels 1 to 5 into a Wild reel. It is possible to get up to 4 Wild reels and this feature can also award multipliers of 2X or 5X and if Glinda appears on the screen then the multiplier will increase to 10X. Put those Ruby Slippers to good use in this feature and you will be in for quite a nice payout!
The Find The Broom feature is triggered when you land 2 or more feature triggering symbols on reels 1, 2, 3, and 4 and have the Wicked Witch symbol on reel 5. It involves picking Wizard of Oz tokens for prizes and these include 2X, 3X, 4X, and 6X multipliers.

If you land one, two, or three feature triggering symbols on reels 1, 2, 3, and 4 combined with any feature triggering symbol on reel 5 then you will activate the Respin feature. Feature triggering symbols will remain in place and feature reels will replace the remaining reels and the reels will respin one time. If at least 2 feature triggering symbols appear on reels 1, 2, 3, and 4 after the respin then a feature is awarded.

Land 2 or more feature symbols and the Crystal Ball on reel 5 and you will trigger the Crystal Ball feature. It is quite similar to the Find the Broom feature but with much better multipliers ranging from 4X all the way up to 200X!

The last feature to highlight is the Emerald City Free Spins game. You can trigger this feature by landing 2 or more feature symbols on reels 1, 2, 3, and 4 and have the Wizard of Oz symbol on reel 5. You will be given 5 free spins and the chance to get additional free spins and wild symbols as well as multipliers ranging from 3X up to 10X.

Theme, Graphics and Sound

The game is beautifully designed and a great tribute to a classic movie. The backdrop is saturated with a bright green glow coming directly from the Emerald City. Symbols are nicely detailed and consist of all of the main characters from the movie as well as some props such as lollipops and baskets. The animations are crisp and I liked how the Wild symbol explodes when it is part of a winning combination.

The music only plays when you spin the reels and it is full of harps and soft piano beats. It suits the game quite well.

The Wizard of Oz - Ruby Slippers is made by WMS and it’s a fitting tribute to a wonderful movie. The presentation is excellent and the sheer amount of features in this slot provide fantastic replay value. The game is highly volatile so you will need to be a bit patient in order to get a big payout but the payouts can be quite substantial when you land one.
