The best Blackjack Strategy to beat the dealer!

2017-09-30 14:00:00

Blackjack, also known as twenty-one, is the most widely played casino banking game in the world. blackjack is a comparing card game between a player and dealer, meaning players compete against the dealer but not against other players. It is played with one or more decks of 52 cards.
The objective of the game is to beat the dealer in one of the following ways:

  • Get 21 points on the player's first two cards (called a "blackjack"), without a dealer blackjack
  • Reach a final score higher than the dealer without exceeding 21
  • Let the dealer draw additional cards until his or her hand exceeds 21

We had a look at a popular blackjack strategy that is often used by professional blackjack players in casinos all over the world.

Basic Blackjack Strategy

To put it in simple terms, the best blackjack strategy is knowing exactly when to hit, stand or double down. Doing this correctly will enable you to cut the house's edge to below 0.5% instead of 2%. This percentage may seem small but it gives the player a better chance of winning.
You should stand when your hand is between 12-16 and the dealer has a 2-6 on show. If you have a 12-16 and the dealer has a 7 up to an Ace, it's best to hit when in this situation. If the opportunity arises you should be prepared to split 8s and Aces. If you have an 11 and the dealer has between 2 and 10 you should consider Doubling your bet in this case.

Should I ever take insurance?

Taking insurance is usually a waste of investment in my opinion. You should only consider taking insurance if you think you can count cards. In this scenario of Blackjack, insurance is essentially a bet @ 2/1 odds on whether the blackjack dealer has a 10 left in the card shoe or not. Depending on the number of decks being used, there may not be any 10s left in the shoe. It is estimated the house gains a 6% edge over the player when insurance is taken.

Check what the dealer has on show

After all, you are trying to beat the dealer so it would make sense to pay attention to what card the dealer has on show. It is good for the player if the dealer has something between 2 and 6. On the flip side, it's not so good for the player if the dealer has anything from a 7 through an Ace.

Keep your game face on

You shouldn’t get emotional about the cards. Emotions and distractions can lead to you making overly excessive bets and can lead to lapses in concentration. Making an error that goes against your blackjack strategy could cost you dearly.
