Take a trip back in time to the 1940s and have a starring role in a Hollywood film noir thriller!

Old Skool Studios invites players to take an old-time trip to the movies with their latest release La Rouge. This game is inspired by classic 1940s Hollywood film noir and is based on a tale of love and twisted double-cross! So if you are a fan of the film noir genre and enjoy recent movies like Frank Miller’s Sin City then this slot should be right up your alley!

La Rouge has 5 reels with 20 paylines and it comes with features such as Stacked Wilds, Free Games, a Gamble mode and a Starlite Bonus game.

Special Features

The first feature to highlight is the Wild symbol and this is illustrated by an image of a lady who bears a striking resemblance to Marilyn Monroe. The symbol substitutes for all symbols except for the Scatter and Free Spins symbols. Make sure to keep a close eye on this symbol as you spin the reels as it is the highest paying symbol in the game. Manage to land 5 Wild symbols on an active payline and your original stake will be multiplied by 1,000!

The Scatter symbol is represented by a detective with a fedora hat. Land 3 or more of these symbols anywhere on the reels and you will trigger the Free Spins feature. It goes without saying, the more Scatter symbols you land then the more Free Spins you’ll receive. For instance, land 3 Scatters and you’ll be given 8 Free Spins but if you manage to land 5 Scatters then you’ll be given 20 Free Spins. Wild Symbols also come extra stacked in Free Spins and a random multiplier is also awarded when Free Spins is triggered. A pleasing aspect of Free Spins is that they can be retriggered so there is plenty scope for lots of big wins with this feature.

The main attraction of the slot is the Starlight Bonus game. This is triggered when you land 3 Bonus symbols on reels 1, 3, and 5. The Bonus symbol is denoted by a film clapper board. It is a multi-stage pick game with up to 5 levels. You need to complete each level in order to join a huge party on the final stage. Each level comes up with bonus items including Prizes, Advances, Win-Alls, and Collects. Keep an eye out for the Win-All items as these handy bonus items award all prizes in the level and advance you to the next level.

The final feature to discuss is the Gamble mode. This is triggered whenever you land a win across the reels and is an optional double or nothing type game. In this game, you must choose between a black and a red star, then some cameras will flash and a lady will appear in either a black or red dress. If you choose correctly then your win is doubled. The game ends after 5 consecutive gamble wins or after you have chosen incorrectly.

Theme, Graphics and Sound

The presentation of this slot is absolutely fantastic as it features some amazing graphics. The game is set in a dark alley with shades of black and white expertly used to highlight shady buildings, moody lights, and menacing shadows. The title of the game is cleverly displayed with red font above the reels and is a nice wink to Frank Miller’s stylish noir movie Sin City. Symbols consist of microphones, roses, vinyl records, hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs and run smoothly across the reels. You’ll also notice a neat swirling animation effect occurs each time you form a win on the reels.

The music features a classic jazz soundtrack and as you would imagine, it complements the theme of the game superbly.

The game has 20 paylines, a reasonable RTP of 95.03%, and a top maximum payout worth 10,000X your bet.

Our Verdict on La Rouge

La Rouge is made by Old Skool Studios and it’s an excellent take on the film noir genre. It really does make you feel like you are taking part in an old Hollywood movie each time you spin the reels. The features of the game keep the excitement levels ticking along nicely and the Starlight Bonus game is great fun to play and offers some decent rewards. It is also quite satisfying to see that you can retrigger more Free Spins. I found this game to be of Medium to High variance so don’t expect a quick payout immediately but when you do, the rewards can be massive.

Take on a clever Femme Fatale to win a fortune in La Rouge!
